Jonathan Dayton Chapter NSDAR was organized 8 February 1896 and chartered 8 April 1896. Our chapter is the eighth oldest chapter in Ohio.
Our chapter is named after Jonathan Dayton, the youngest person to sign the U.S. Constitution. Jonathan Dayton was born in New Jersey on October 16, 1760. At the age of 15, he joined the Revolutionary War serving in the 3rd New Jersey Regiment and later the 2nd New Jersey Regiment.
He fought in the battles of Brandywine Creek, Germantown and the Battle of Yorktown. At the age of 19, he was promoted to the rank of captain. As an adult, he became a politician and was the fourth Speaker of the United States House of Representatives. Jonathan Dayton, Arthur St. Clair, James Wilkinson, and Israel Ludlow purchased 250,000 acres in the Great Miami River basin and on this land the city of Dayton was established in 1796.
Jonathan Dayton never did visit Dayton and he died on October 9, 1824.
